SUPERZOO is the pet industry's largest tradeshow. Established in 1950 by the World Pet Association, the show provides a place for the entire industry to come together and learn from one another. With over 16,000 attendees and 1,100+ exhibitors, SUPERZOO is the place to see what’s new in the pet industry.
This year was no different. There was a large focus on how the pet industry can help give pets a better quality of life and keep the Earth a healthy place for them. Here are 5 of the top product and retail trends we saw at SUPERZOO that drive that focus:
- Eco-Friendly Litter and Animal Bedding
- Enrichment Products and Calming Toys and Treats
- Recycled and Biodegradable Poop Bags
- Natural, Raw, and Freeze-Dried Food and Treats
- Squeezable Snacks, Toppers and Mix-ins
Eco-Friendly Litter and Animal Bedding
Made using biodegradable materials, this type of litter allows cat parents to reduce their carbon footprint over the course of their cat’s life. Brands like pidan and Small Pet Select are offering litter made from natural materials like cornstarch and hemp fibers, offering a sustainable and environmentally responsible alternative to traditional litter. Other brands have launched animal bedding that follows these same environmentally friendly initiatives.
Enrichment Products and Calming Toys and Treats
A hot topic in the pet industry, pet enrichment has seen an expansion as many new brands are embracing what it means to offer your pet a meaningful life.
Woof offered their new Pupsicle and the Bite n’ Brush at SUPERZOO. Owning the intersection between wellness and play, these products offer enrichment for pets that is beneficial in more than one way. Another brand, Under the Weather, offers squeezable calming treats. Their PB&Chill Calming Peanut Butter for Dogs comes in convenient 1 oz packets and offers a healthy, on-the-go solution for nervous dogs.
Brands and products like these are offering easy options for pet parents to elevate the lives of their pets.
Recycled and Biodegradable Poop Bags
To reduce the pet industry’s carbon footprint and keep the planet a healthy place for our pets, several brands launched recycled or biodegradable poop bags. 3poo1 launched the world’s only color-coded dog poop bags. Not only does the product let you know when you’re on your last bag, but they have no paper core and are made from certified compostable plant-based materials. Earth Rated’s poop bags, made from 65% certified post-consumer recycled plastic, offer something similar. Offering a variety of thicknesses, scents, and refill roll options, the brand aims to “give a second life to more than 5 million pounds of landfill-bound plastic each year”. The pet industry is making moves to help pet owners leave a “pawsitive” impact on the planet.
Natural, Raw, and Freeze-Dried Food and Treats
Increasingly, pet parents are concerned about improving the quality of their pet’s diet. 43.6% of pet parents are reported as prioritizing the quality and health of their pet’s foods over their own according to a recent survey. The new product showcase at SUPERZOO echoed similar sentiments with several well-known brands unveiling new, healthier food options.
Boss Dog® introduced their Goat Milk Powder Problend, offering an easy way to ensure pets are receiving probiotics and other important nutrients. The brand also offers a variety of raw diet options to choose from, including toppers.
A Better Treat, a brand guided by raw nutrition, launched its Organic Freeze Dried Pumpkin Treats. Certified USDA organic, these treats have just one ingredient: organic pumpkin. Promoted as a mess-free alternative to other pumpkin treats, this product still delivers the same great health benefits.
Primal Pet Foods launched Kibble in the Raw™. The new line sports the high nutrient levels and ease of digestion that raw food offers with the convenience of kibble. Through small batch cold-pressing and freeze-drying, the kibble preserves the benefits and flavor of raw recipes.
Other brands, like RAWZ are making raw diets even more accessible. With countless options for natural, raw, and freeze-dried foods and treats, the pet industry is moving in a healthier direction.
Squeezable Snacks, Toppers and Mix-Ins
Pet parents are looking for new, healthier ways to care for their pets and are willing to spend the money to do so. As a result, many popular brands are offering new options for snacks, meal toppers, and food mix-ins.
Instinct launched their Raw Boost Shakers™. With severally naturally sourced ingredients, the new shakers offer an easy way to include the benefits of raw nutrition in a dog’s or cat’s diet. Similarly, the brand offers freeze-dried raw mixers to help pet parents offer variety to their pets.
What’s Barking, a woman and veteran-owned small business, also launched their pet food toppers. With three flavors, these toppers are made with all-natural ingredients, are USDA-certified organic, and come in 100% recyclable packaging.
